We have arrived in Japan

Here we are – We have left Narita, been limo bused to within 5 minutes of our new home, walked the 5 minutes to our new home, picked up our keys, and unpacked!

Two things that come out loud and clear within this time are:

1. Everyone is very nice and everything is very orderly; and

2. So many things seem to be so much more complicated then you would have thought they would need to be.

The second point really seems to be the one that has been a surprise.  I mean, most of the time you hear about the crazy toilets which have all sorts of functions, which our apartment does have here – example being:

Day 1 in Japan

However the controls which we didn’t expect was that the water for the shower and for the kitchen sink water and the shower and bath water.  This is one of those things that I was thinking would just operate as per usual – there is a tap, one side is hot the other side is cold… but … ahhh,  no, instead there are these controls next to the sink and shower tap:

With all the buttons written as they are you can imagine we have some problems!  Our first shower was barely warm, and then the next one wasn’t much better but there was a voice that kept talking to us in the unit, so you would be having your shower and then randomly from right behind you there was a little Japanese voice trying to tell you something!  Still not sure what it is, but at least she doesn’t seem to talk as much anymore!

Then the heating and ventilation systems are similarly rather confusing, which means in the 2-5 degrees outside is being felt a little more than we would have planned, because we can’t get a way to stop the cold air getting pumped in some slots! These are those:

So – lesson from the first day has been about how many controls you can need for every day life that you didn’t realise you needed!

Today – being Day 2 is going to be about doing some more sight seeing and getting our bearings.
